If they sell this stuff near you, try it. It’s delicious. Smoky and malty with a nice bitter crispness like a dark lager should have.

Oh, smoke and malt is fine in my book. As soon as they’re talking about fruity notes or spices I want to punch a baby, though.

I've actually never had red oak that I can remember. For a while I was stuck on New Belgium brews, and I went to high school with the daughter of the founder of Carolina Blonde - their platinum blonde witbier was amazing but I don't think it survived the sale to foothills.

My friend, my friend you must drop what you are doing and rush to your nearest purveyor of fine local brews. Red Oak is my hands down favorite beer, and I have had the pleasure of drinking quite a few offerings. I have toured the brewery twice, and had a drink with the brew master, and I can attest that they are fine people that make fine beer. The first time I came to China, I wrote them an email saying how much I missed their stuff, and when I came home four months later, they had a cold growler waiting for me. Like I said, fine folks.

If you’re jonesing for something lighter, check out their Hummingbird, and if you’re looking to the dark side (hehe) you can’t go wrong with their Big Oak. Honestly, though, nothing tastes finer than an old fashioned Red Oak on draft. Run, don’t walk, to your nearest Harris Teeter.
